Standard New to Germany - Regulations question

Hallo everybody,

First of all, thank you for reading my English message. My german is not yet good to read and or write, without killing the language.

I am new to Germany. Moved last year from Netherlands.

I have a 4.5 meters 50hp boat. And I am looking the regulations in detail, for Inland waters only.
We plan to use the boat in Potsdam and Brandenburg waters, during Day only and on good weather. As we have a little baby, it will not be easy to use it other moments.

What the boat has:
- 2 fire extinguishers
- Life vests for all on board (two life vests self inflatable for the skypper)
- Paddle
- Anchor with Cable (special for the anchor)
- multiple types of lines

this is enough for Netherlands to be legal (you do not even need anchor, paddle

Planning to buy a Horn, as I know is needed except this do I need, navigation lights installed? Flag? Fireworks? Destress signal etc.

Thank you

Hi,
In Germany, no special equipment is required for inland waterways. The boat must have a registration number and approved navigation lights (if you are boating at night). Above 15HP you need a driver's license (Sportbootführerschein binnen). What to recommend is another question.
Welcome in my boating area - the best in Germany

Hi Varet,

first of all, you need a boating license for boats over 15 pk.

If you want to move your boat after sundown, you need navigation lights, watch out, there are legal and illegal ones. Just ask in the shop.

For a vhf radio you need a license as well, handhelds are not legal on inland waterways.

The rest is optional, just follow your common sense.

Oh, and Iirc you need a horn.

First of all, welcome to our community!

I am sure You will have be the best-equipped 4,5m-boat in Germany. It might sound funny, because in Germany nearly everything is regulated deeply, but there are no basic equipment rules for small pleasure crafts like Yours.

Navigation lighting is only needed when You are on tour during darkness or bad weather conditions.

In my opinion, You don't need a flag on inland waterways (only on the Oder as a border river) as a dutchman living in germany.

But there is a question left: what about a driving license? In my opinion, You need the german "Sportbootführerschein Binnen", because Your boat has more than 15 hp and You are living in Germany.

Thank you all for the answers.
As we have a toddler 2 year old. I prefer only day use.

My understanding is, if I am on water during day no lights installed I am ok (inland)

Radio is needed in some waters, like in a part of berlin, translating the ordinance of berlin police.

I saw havel, potsdam do not require radio.

I am Greek.
I have taken multiple times the same license.
Greek, british, Dutch and now i also got the German SBF binnen and see.

Horn, they told me a hand one with pressurized air is enough.

We even have vests for all sizes of kida, from 5kg to 30kg. I know strange but better safe than sorry.

What is recommended? As safety fisrt.
Me boat has type c approval, i saw the adac list. But i find it too much for inland.
